Kennesaw State research aims to safeguard Georgia's transportation systems

Despite ranking among the best states for infrastructure health, Georgia is given a meager C+ grade from the American Society of Civil Engineers, which cites general signs of deterioration that require attention to mitigate catastrophe. Poised to answer the call are Kennesaw State University researchers who, equipped with external grants, are solving Georgia鈥檚 most pressing transportation problems, said Sunanda Dissanayake, chair of KSU鈥檚 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Kennesaw State researcher taps engineering background to discover solutions for stomach diseases

For many people, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are chronic and life-altering conditions. Yet despite their prevalence, doctors are often challenged by patients experiencing persistent symptoms with no way to accurately identify and diagnose diseases. Kennesaw State University鈥檚 Lei Shi, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET), is working to change that. Supported by a recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, Shi is leading a research project that could alter how GI disorders are diagnosed and treated using virtual replicas of a human stomach.

William Thompson, a mechanical engineering major, is working with Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ayse Tekes on the project, 鈥淒evelopment and Testing of Bio-Inspired and Lightweight Exoskeleton for Enhanced Upper Body Mobility鈥� as a part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
